The project is part of the improvement of the High-Capacity rail line between Palermo and Catania in Sicily.
It includes the excavation of a double-tube tunnel of approximately 19.9 km (Galleria Alia) in total variation with respect to the route of the current rail line, as well as 40 cross passages between the two tubes.
