Eland Platinum Mine is situated near the vibrant towns of the North West Province - Brits and Hartebeestpoort, as well as Pretoria, the administrative capital city of South Africa.
The Eland mining operation is a shallow hybrid UG2 PGMs reef, built in decline shafts that give access to the orebody reserves.
Geology summary:
Developing under an overburden of varying thickness with spot outcrops of gabbronorites and anorthosites, the geological lithology of the mine is represented by a layered sequence of anorthosite, norite, chromite and pyroxenite belonging to the Upper Critical Zone and the overlying gabbronorites of the younger Main Zone in the north. The Critical Zone is characterized by regular alternation of cumulus chromite within pyroxenites and olivine‐rich rocks, often in fine‐scaled layering and hosts the most significant seams of economic PGE mineralization, occurring within two regionally continuous horizons known as the UG2 Reef and Merensky Reef. The Main Zone consists of norites grading upwards into gabbronorites and includes mottled anorthosite and a distinctive pyroxenite layer named the Pyroxenite Marker.
